Murad kept the death of his father a secret until he consolidated enough power to drown his under age brother and then kill the murderer he had hired for the job. His passionate and treacherous cruelty was unfortunately matched by exceptional diplomatic and military genius.
He inspired his troops at the siege of Byzantium by promising them three days of unchecked plunder including giving their hate and blood lust power over all the men, women, and children to do with whatever they could imagine.
After conquering Byzantium, he immediately killed all the older people as "unusable eaters," sent the young women to harems, sold the men and children into slavery, destroyed precious paintings, smashed priceless statues, and burned ancient books containing the wisdom of Greek history.
He later started a war against Venice, Serbia and Hungary, captured huge amount of the Balkans, annexed Serbia, and won the Crusade of Varna.
