Encyclopédie

By Diderot

Denis Diderot and co-edited by Jean le Rond d'Alembert.
17 volumes of text, 11 volumes of plates, 74,000 articles, more than 130 contributors; the first encyclopedia that described mechanical arts and to include contributions from many different people, it was a clear representation of thought during the Enlightenment period of history. The goal of this work was "to change the way people think" in an attempt to include all of the world’s knowledge in one place. It broke the Catholic Church’s monopoly on knowledge, helped clarify the social issues culminating in the French Revolution, undermined old ideas and promulgated new ones. It had a big impact on all of Europe and this extended throughout the world and down into modern times.
